Sarah Sabin
Studio Holder
I have been working as an artist for over 25 years. Gathering research from both locations and people, and dissecting and reassembling it: My practice has been focused on creatively re-interpreting, re-mapping, and re-imagining sites and their histories through making, public participation, and site-specific projects in the public realm. My commissions have included work for galleries, museums, architects, councils, and housing associations.
To elaborate:
My work has been concerned for many years with ‘digging about under the surface’. Methods and processes used in Archaeology often play a part directly in the research and making of my artwork, which has been variously described as multi-layered, and ‘mischievous.’ I work across a range of media, preferring to use what feels most appropriate to the project.
I am intrigued by what might have been, rather than certainties, and sometimes employ speculative approaches, collaborating with archaeologists, and also using ‘folk’ methods such as divining to find hidden details.
I have more recently been including investigations deeper into time, to find the altogether different past landscapes and geologies of places; exploring the use of materials from the location, and low- tech and affordable methods of production.
I am available freelance for commissions and projects.
I also lecture part time in higher education.
